After 176 overs,India 654/6 ( Karun Nair 235 , Ravindra Jadeja 18)
An unconvincing pull by Jadeja, hits the cue-end of his willow and falls short of gully. Nair flicks to mid-wicket and picks up a couple. He drives to sweeper covers for a single. Jadeja moves across and hooks Ball over deep square leg for a maximum. With that shot, India reaches the 650-run mark. A similar shot to deep mid-wicket for a four. India upping the ante now, eyeing 200?
After 175 overs,India 640/6 ( Karun Nair 232 , Ravindra Jadeja 7)
Jadeja hops to defend and sets off for a quick single. Karun drives to deep covers to bring Jadeja back on strike. Jadeja tucks Broad to mid-wicket for another single. Good ball, Karun looks to cut, the ball misses the outside edge narrowly. Karun pulls, not with total control, to cow corner and gets a boundary.
After 174 overs,India 633/6 ( Karun Nair 227 , Ravindra Jadeja 5)
Three singles in the over, as Nair and Jadeja exchange the strike between themselves. Meanwhile, India’s lead goes past the 150-run mark. Looks like the hosts are playing for an innings win at the moment, for which they will need another 100 runs on the board.
After 173 overs,India 630/6 ( Karun Nair 226 , Ravindra Jadeja 3)
SIX! More cheeky stuff by Karun Nair, as he uses the pace in a Broad snorter to clear the long-stop fence — his second six of the innings. The Karnataka batsman pulls the last ball towards square-leg, though it is stopped by a fielder.
After 172 overs,India 620/6 ( Karun Nair 218 , Ravindra Jadeja 1)
DROPPED! Nair survives on 217 after edging a short ball from Ball (pun not intended) to the slips, where Joe Root fails to grab what was a tough chance. Can’t say his dismissal would’ve caused much damage for the hosts though.
After 171 overs,India 616/6 ( Karun Nair 216 , Ravindra Jadeja 0)
OUT! It takes a one-handed blinder by Jos Buttler at gully to finally end what was turning out to be a marathon partnership, worth 181 at the time of the dismissal. Ashwin departs for 67, as India lose their sixth wicket with 616 on board (when will the declaration come?). Jadeja, the new batsman, is greeted by a hostile Broad bouncer first ball.
Ravichandran Ashwin c Jos Buttler b Stuart Broad 67 (149)
After 170 overs,India 614/5 ( Karun Nair 215 , Ravichandran Ashwin 66)
Ball back into the attack from the other end. Ball delivers a short one in the first ball, which is awkwardly slapped away past mid-on for a boundary — the 25th in Nair’s innings. Eight runs scored off the over.
After 169 overs,India 606/5 ( Karun Nair 208 , Ravichandran Ashwin 65)
Broad back into the attack; Ashwin opens the face of his bat in the second delivery, and guides it past third man to get his sixth boundary. Six runs off the over.
After 168 overs,India 600/5 ( Karun Nair 207 , Ravichandran Ashwin 60)
Nair continues to bat fluidly, slashing the third ball of the over towards sweeper extra-cover, where it comfortably beats the running fielders. Wonder when the declaration will come in.
After 167 overs,India 593/5 ( Karun Nair 202 , Ravichandran Ashwin 58)
DOUBLE-CENTURY it is for Karun Nair! He does what Rahul failed to do earlier in the innings — get to the 200-run mark! And what a way to get to the milestone, with a flourishing cover drive! Eight runs scored in the over.
After 166 overs,India 585/5 ( Karun Nair 197 , Ravichandran Ashwin 55)
Karun takes a single first ball after tea to move to 196, with Moeen Ali starting the proceedings for the visitors in the final session of the day. The duo rotate the strike between themselves. Nair brings up the 150-run stand for the sixth wicket with a single in the third ball.
Tea, Day 4: Another tough session for England. India are ahead by 105 runs and Karun Nair is 5 runs away from a well deserved double century. India started accelerating as soon as they went past the lead and scored at a run rate of 3.96.
Watch our cricket expert Ayaz Memon analyse the second session of Day 4.
After 164 overs,India 582/5 ( Karun Nair 195 , Ravichandran Ashwin 54)
Ashwin pushes Moeen’s first ball to long-on for a single. Oh sharp spin. Karun looks to reverse sweep, but pulls out of it after seeing the turn. The ball narrowly misses the leg stump. He drives to extra cover and picks up a couple.
After 163 overs,India 579/5 ( Karun Nair 193 , Ravichandran Ashwin 53)
Karun almost plays on, while looking to drive, but luck is with him as the ball races away to fine leg for a boundary. He’s entered 190s now and India’s lead crosses 100.
After 162 overs,India 575/5 ( Karun Nair 189 , Ravichandran Ashwin 53)
India taking easy singles. The field is spread. England just waiting for the declaration. 7 of them off the last three overs.
After 159 overs,India 568/5 ( Karun Nair 184 , Ravichandran Ashwin 51)
Cook introduces Jennings into the attack. And a huge shout for lbw in his first ball. Looked out to me, but umpire thinks otherwise. Height was the factor maybe. Nope, it was hitting. England don’t have any reviews left, but the umpire’s call would have stayed. Ashwin brings up yet another 50.
FIFTY! Ashwin flicks it to fine leg to bring up his 10th Test half-century in Tests.
After 158 overs,India 563/5 ( Karun Nair 183 , Ravichandran Ashwin 47)
Four, two, Four. India all over England. Shoulders dropping, Cook seems clueless. Karun is 18 short of a double century. He nudges it to leg-side to retain strike.
After 157 overs,India 552/5 ( Karun Nair 172 , Ravichandran Ashwin 47)
9 off the last three overs. Karun sweeps Rashid from outisde off to deep mid-wicket. He sweeps it again to leg-side for one. Ashwin cuts towards point fence for a four. Costly over. 9 off it. India lead by 75 runs.
100-run stand comes up between Nair and Ashwin in the 154th over.
After 152 overs,India 532/5 ( Karun Nair 160 , Ravichandran Ashwin 39)
Dawson allows two runs off his 39th over.
After 151 overs,India 530/5 ( Karun Nair 159 , Ravichandran Ashwin 38)
Bairstow goes up for a caught behind as Nair looks to reverse sweep. Umpire looks disinterested. Karun sweeps and sweeps it hard to backward square leg for a run. India’s lead crosses 50 (53) runs. Drinks have been called.
After 150 overs,India 525/5 ( Karun Nair 154 , Ravichandran Ashwin 38)
Dawson and Rashid operating in tandem. But the runs haven’t stopped. 10 off the last 4 overs.
After 146 overs,India 515/5 ( Karun Nair 151 , Ravichandran Ashwin 31)
Scoring for fun now these two, Ashwin goes back and half-pulls or half-flicks Moeen to deep square leg for a boundary.
After 145 overs,India 509/5 ( Karun Nair 150 , Ravichandran Ashwin 26)
Karun hits two consecutive boundaries off Moeen Ali. MAIDEN 150 for Karun Nair. The dressing room applauds the youngster’s effort. India scoring at a quicker rate now, they lead by 32 runs. When should they declare? After a lead of 100 runs, maybe?
After 143 overs,India 497/5 ( Karun Nair 141 , Ravichandran Ashwin 24)
Nair flicks Ball on the leg-side for one. Lovely use of wrists by Ashwin, who pulls to long leg to bring Nair on strike. Oh glorious!Nair goes forward and drives Ball on the up past the cover-point fielder and earns a boundary.
After 142 overs,India 491/5 ( Karun Nair 136 , Ravichandran Ashwin 23)
Ashwin rocks back and late cuts Moeen, beats the slip, and gets a boundary.
After 141 overs,India 487/5 ( Karun Nair 136 , Ravichandran Ashwin 19)
Cheeky! Nair uppercuts Ball over the keeper’s head for a boundary. That brings up the fifty run stand between him and Ashwin. He picks up a couple off the last ball. India toying with English bowlers.
After 140 overs,India 480/5 ( Karun Nair 130 , Ravichandran Ashwin 18)
Nair pushes to covers for one. MONSTER SIX! Ashwin dances down the track and slams Moeen over long-on. India into the lead. Ashwin retains strike on the last ball.
After 139 overs,India 472/5 ( Karun Nair 129 , Ravichandran Ashwin 11)
0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0: Ball’s 17th over.
After 138 overs,India 472/5 ( Karun Nair 129 , Ravichandran Ashwin 11)
Karun sweeps Moeen to deep square leg and brings Ashwin on strike. Ashwin tickles it past the leg slip and takes a single. SHOT! Karun sweeps Moeen to deep mid-wicket for a boundary. India trail only by 5 runs now.
After 137 overs,India 466/5 ( Karun Nair 124 , Ravichandran Ashwin 10)
Huge appeal for bat-pad catch at short leg off Moeen’s bowling. Erasmus says not out. Ashwin nudges to backward square leg for a single. Karun Nair retains strike off the last ball. Ball comes to bowl for the first time on Monday, just a singe off his 16th over.
The players are back for the second session. Moeen Ali to bowl the first over after lunch.
Watch our cricket expert Ayaz Memon review the first session of Day 4.
Lunch, Day 4: India has controlled the session. The first hour completely belonged to the hosts. Vijay survived a caught behind decision, but it didn’t harm England much as Liam Dawson dismissed him soon. On the other side, Nair has been untroubled. India trail by 14 runs with five wickets remaining.
After 132 overs,India 452/5 ( Karun Nair 117 , Ravichandran Ashwin 3)
Ashwin plays the inside-out drive to extra cover to retain strike. India trail by 25 runs.
After 131 overs,India 451/5 ( Karun Nair 117 , Ravichandran Ashwin 2)
Nair cuts Stokes, beats the gully and runs one. That run brings up 450 for India. Stokes’ second delivery keeps low! Ashwin does well to flick it to long leg for a single. Nair’s block goes in the air and falls just short of the mid-off fielder.
After 130 overs,India 449/5 ( Karun Nair 116 , Ravichandran Ashwin 1)
Ashwin gets off the mark with an inside edge to mid-wicket. It took him 15 balls to score his first run. Nair sweeps to deep backward square leg and runs one.
After 129 overs,India 447/5 ( Karun Nair 115 , Ravichandran Ashwin 0)
Nair plays out Stokes in the 129th over.
After 128 overs,India 447/5 ( Karun Nair 115 , Ravichandran Ashwin 0)
A silly mid-off for Karun against Dawson. He pushes it to long-on and takes a single. Ashwin drives and Jennings has to take a blow on his shin pads. Edged? Will have to wait for the replay. Ashwin didn’t nick it.
After 127 overs,India 446/5 ( Karun Nair 114 , Ravichandran Ashwin 0)
Goodness gracious! Short ball, Karun looks to block and it hits the shoulder of the bat and lobs over the first slip. Four runs! It has broke his bat, but it doesn’t matter as he drives Stokes for another boundary to cover-point piece. Oh he’s living dangerously, goes for the drive and the ball narrowly misses the outside edge. He dabs to third man to retain strike. Eventful over, 9 off it.
After 126 overs,India 437/5 ( Karun Nair 105 , Ravichandran Ashwin 0)
Tidy three overs for England. Just 2 runs and 1 wicket off them.
OUT! Dawson traps Vijay lbw to pick up his first Test wicket. Vijay reviews it after a discussion with Karun Nair. Three reds and he has to go! Vijay lbw b Liam Dawson 29(76)
After 123 overs,India 435/4 ( Karun Nair 103 , Murali Vijay 29)
Right then, 5 fielders on the off-side. Nair’s batting on 99. He blocks to point and sets off, Vijay shouts no. Similar shout and Vijay again refuses to run one. Vijay just calming Nair’s nerves. He’s looked much composed since. Has blocked two deliveries and leaves the 5th ball. There it is! He beats the point fielder and gets to the milestone with a four.
CENTURY! Nair slices it and beats the point fielder. Off goes the helmet, raises his bat to celebrate. Gritty knock, he struggled in his first two Tests, but has been stupendous at Chennai.
After 122 overs,India 431/4 ( Karun Nair 99 , Murali Vijay 29)
Nair pulls Dawson to backward square leg and reaches 99. Four dots follow.
After 121 overs,India 430/4 ( Karun Nair 98 , Murali Vijay 29)

After 117 overs,India 412/4 ( Karun Nair 87 , Murali Vijay 22)
Outside off, left alone by Vijay. Vijay hops and flicks it to fine leg for a single. Nair cuts through point and runs one.
After 116 overs,India 410/4 ( Karun Nair 86 , Murali Vijay 21)
Nair leans forward and defends Dawson towards covers. Good length, on the middle stump, Nair blocks it with soft hands. Brilliant use of the feet. Nair dances down the ground and lofts the southpaw over long-on for a maximum.
After 115 overs,India 404/4 ( Karun Nair 80 , Murali Vijay 21)
A huge appeal for caught behind, umpire turns it down. Vijay looked to drive and nicked it to Bairstow, unfortunately England don’t have any reviews left. Vijay survives. Loose shot from the local boy. Broad bowls a bouncer, Vijay ducks to leave it alone. Last ball of the over blocked back to Broad.
After 114 overs,India 404/4 ( Karun Nair 80 , Murali Vijay 21)
Karun Nair nudges Dawson to fine leg for a single. Vijay cuts it on the back foot to cover point and retains strike.
After 113 overs,India 402/4 ( Karun Nair 79 , Murali Vijay 20)
Karun starts with a double to wide of mid-on. 3 runs off Broad’s 19th over. Cook introduces Dawson from the other end. Oh risky! Nair looks to leave Broad’s delivery, but fails to back off completely. A thick outside which flies between first slip and gully and races away to third man for a four. Lucky escape for Nair. Vijay picks up a double to mid-wicket to bring up the 400-run mark. Vijay plays out Broad’s 21st over.
Karun Nair and Murali Vijay were batting on 71 and 17 at the end of Day 3, with India reaching a score of 391/4 in response to England’s first innings score of 477.
It would be imperative for England to bowl out India as early as possible on Day 4, and not let them take a lead of beyond 50 at any cost.
Watch our cricket expert Ayaz Memon preview the Day 4 of the fifth Test.
Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the fourth day of the Chennai Test. India trail by 86 runs with 6 wickets left.
That’s it from us today. Do join us tomorrow for the fourth day’s action.
Watch our cricket expert Ayaz Memon analyse the third day’s play of the fifth Test.
Rahul: Yeah well look I haven’t played a lot of matches, was injured, wasn’t easy to come back and find form. Time at Bombay was crucial. Once I came here, this pitch was good, and I didn’t want to waste the opportunity. I played one Ranji game, that was good to get my flow. This hundred will be on the top of the list. I played a horrible shot and got out on 199.
Stumps, Day 3: India’s day (again). Even thought KL Rahul missed out on his double century, he lead from the front to reduce the trail as much as possible. Karun Nair , too had a great day as he showed grit and perseverance in his unbeaten knock of 71. Both the Karnataka batsmen didn’t allow England to capitalise after Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli’s wickets. Alastair Cook, yet again, had a poor day. None of his plans seemed to work. And had it not been for Stuart Broad’s fiery spell on a benign pitch, who knows, Kohli wouldn’t have got out. India are still behind by 86 runs with Murali Vijay and Karun Nair at the crease.
Moeen Ali to bowl the last over of the day.
After 107 overs,India 383/4 ( Karun Nair 71 , Murali Vijay 9)
Nair goes back and takes a single to covers. Vijay drives it through covers and picks up a couple. Short and Vijay hits it to cover-point to retain strike.
After 106 overs,India 379/4 ( Karun Nair 70 , Murali Vijay 6)
The local boy Murali Vijay has arrived at the centre. His bottom edge races away to square leg for a four.
Rahul’s reaction after getting out for a brilliant 199.
OUT! Rahul chases a wide ball and holes it out to the cover-point fielder. He buries his head in his hands. He walks back to the pavilion in utmost disbelief, Virat Kohli cannot believe and the crowd can’t either. He departs for 199! Rahul c Buttler b Adil Rashid 199(311)
Day 3, Report: KL Rahul missed out on a double century as India posted 391/4 in their first innings at stumps on the third day of the fifth and final Test against England on Sunday.
The hosts now trail by 86 runs England’s first innings score of 477.
At the close of the day’s play, Karun Nair was batting on 71 with Murali Vijay (17 batting) at the other end.
Rahul missed out his maiden double-century as he was dismised while on 199.
Rahul’s fellow opener Parthiv Patel scored 71 to register his sixth half-century in Test cricket.
Virat Kohli and Alastair Cook. AP
For England, Stuart Broad, Moeen Ali, Ben Stokes and Adil Rashid claimed a wicket each.
Rahul batted brilliantly over 311 balls for his 199, hitting 16 boundaries and three sixes along the way.
But nerves and impatience got the better of him a single run short of his double-century as he went after a wide delivery outside the off-stump. The ball kissed the top edge of the bat and ballooned up for an easy catch for Jos Buttler at cover.
Rahul’s score is the second highest by an Indian opener against England after the Sunil Gavaskar who had piled up 221 at the Oval in 1979.
A total of nine batsmen have been dismissed on 199 in Test cricket. Rahul is the second Indian on that list after Mohammad Azharuddin, who was dismissed on that score against Sri Lanka in Kanpur on December 17, 1986.
Rahul has now notched up four Test centuries since the start of 2015, the most by an Indian opener over that period.
His four centuries have come off 17 innings. Over this period, Murali Vijay has notched up three tons in 26 knocks and Shikhar Dhawan two in 16.
Earlier, resuming the day at 60/0, Rahul and wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel completed their respective half-centuries as the hosts gave a perfect reply to England’s handsome first innings total.
Patel, who has shown excellent form with the bat after returning to the Indian team following a gap of eight years, scored 71 runs before stepping out to Ali only to top-edge a spinning delivery to Jos Buttler at cover.
Patel’s 112-ball stay in the middle contained seven hits to the fence. This was his sixth half-century in Test cricket.
Rahul and Patel made their intentions clear from the very beginning, as the latter drove brilliantly towards mid-on off a delivery from pacer Stuart Broad in only the second over of the day.
Then, it was Rahul who hammered two sixes — both over long-on — in the third and fifth over bowled by left-arm spinner Liam Dawson. Broad too was at the receiving end of the punishment from Rahul and Patel.
As the duo reached their 100-run stand with smooth batting display, the runs came at a steady clip.
Parthiv, who scored his sixth 50 in Test cricket, hit seven boundries during his 71-run knock that ended when the left-hander top-edged a spinning delivery from Moeen Ali to Jos Buttler at cover.
Rahul was unbeaten on 133 runs at tea with Karun Nair on 19 at the other end.
India lost the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Virat Kohli cheaply between the lunch and tea breaks.
Pujara edged a Ben Stokes delivery to Alistair Cook in the slips while Kohli’s attempted drive off Stuart Broad found Keaton Jennings at extra cover.
Karun Nair joined Rahul at the crease following Kohli’s departure and the duo proceeded to consolidate India’s position with a 161-run stand.
