A 28-year-old engineer, employed with BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), was killed and four others employees were injured after they were attacked by a mob in Jhul Jhuli village of West Delhi.
According to BSES, the deceased Abhimanyu Singh was with his team on an inspection of power theft in the western part of the city. He was accompanied by two other teams of the same company and a team of police officials when a mob attacked them thereby causing them to retreat.
While they were on their way back, a group of bike borne miscreants chased them following which one of the cars met with an accident and rammed into a tree. The five occupants of the car were injured. Later one of them, identified as Abhimanyu Singh, succumbed to his injuries.
“These are not isolated incidents. Efforts of discom teams to check the irregularities are often thwarted by the law-defying people who function like organised gangs. Whenever discom teams reach these ‘sensitive’ areas, criminal elements ‘gherao’ them and obstruct officials in imparting their duties. Power theft has taken shape of organised crime and active police support is needed to curb this menace,” said a BSES spokesperson.
According to Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL), another discom in the city, several efforts are being taken to curb the increasing menance of power theft.
